Scheduling/ rescheduling your surgery

    • Your physician’s office will be scheduling your procedure. They will contact you with the date and time of your procedure.  Please read through the white folder given to you by your physician. If you have any questions on the information given please call Windward Surgery Center at (808) 218-6850.
  • If for any reason you need to cancel your procedure please call your physicians office.

Getting ready for your procedure

  • Thank your for choosing to have your procedure with us at the Windward Surgery Center.
  • Before your procedure day, you will receive a pre-registration phone call from our business office. If we do not reach you by 2pm the business day prior to your surgery date, Please call our office at  (808) 218-6850
  •  We will:
  1. Confirm your demographic information Estimate the payment amount your insurance will cover, and your estimated co-payment and/or deductible due, if this applies.Your co-payment amount is due on your date of service.
  2. Confirm your registration arrival time
  3. If you do not expect to be home or are unable to answer the call please contact us at (808)218-6850 to pre register, at the most convenient time for you between 8:00am and 4:30pm .
  4. A day or two before your surgery, you will receive a separate phone call from our nursing staff.
  5. The nurses will review your medical history and known allergies.
  6. Please notify your nurse if you are taking the following medications: aspirin, NSAIDS (i.e. Motrin, Advil, and ibuprofen), Iron tablets, Fiber supplements, Vitamin/Herbal supplements.
  7. Please let us know if you have an elevated temperature, cough, cold, vomiting or diarrhea between your last visit to the surgeon and the day of your surgery.
  8. An Anesthesiologist will discuss what type of anesthesia you will receive the day of your surgery.

Preparing for your procedure

  • For GI Procedures: Closely follow a clear liquid diet. Instructions can be found in your white folder from your physician’s office. If you have any questions about the information given please call Windward Surgery Center at (808) 218-6850.
  • For GI Procedures: Avoid liquids with red or purple food coloring
  • For GI Procedures: If unable to complete the prep bowel prep, please contact your physician’s office.
  • Please avoid smoking after midnight before your procedure, it may cause nausea.
  • If you have advance directives you may bring them with you but know that we do not recognize them here at our center.
  • You must plan to have someone drive you home. If you are unable to arrange a ride, please contact your physician’s office to discuss the possibility of arranging a medical taxi.
  • All patients must arrive 1 hour before the procedure is scheduled. If you are having cataract surgery you are required to arrive 1 hour and 30 minutes before surgery.
  • Prior to your surgery, you will be asked to sign a consent form, agreeing to the surgery. If a parent or a legal guardian is signing on your behalf, they must remain present at the center during the surgery. If a legal guardian or power of attorney will be representing you, you must provide necessary documentation 3 days prior to your procedure. You may also fax this information to (808)218-6870.
  • While here for your procedure it may be necessary to do x-rays, additional lab work, or pathology. If so you may receive a billing statement for those related professional fees.

 

Check-in for surgery:

  • When you arrive at our center, we ask that you check-in at the registration desk to verify the name and phone number of the Adult driving you home as well Insurance information, and any other information needed.
  • Bring with you the following items:
    • Your photo ID, Insurance card, and white folder from your physician’s office.
    • A Copy of your Advance Healthcare Directives, Living Will or Power of Attorney if you have one
    • Containers for your contacts, dentures, hearing aids, and eyeglasses
    • Socks to keep your feet warm
    • If co-payment was discussed please bring your payment with you on the day of service. We accept cash, check, and credit (Visa or MasterCard).
    • List of regularly taken medications.
    • Please leave all valuables money or jewelry at home.
    • Do not wear lipstick or nail polish as both interfere with anesthesia monitoring. Your safety is our priority.
    • For procedures requiring an anesthesiologist, he or she will discuss your anesthesia with you and answer any questions.

 

After your procedure

  • The nurse will give you special instructions about your diet and activity level for the day.
  • You will be given information on when to follow up with you doctors office
  • The nurse will call your ride to come pick you up in the waiting room or curbside in front of the building.
  • For your safety, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO DRIVE YOURSELF HOME or take the bus.
  • You are required to have a responsible Adult take you home and stay with you the day of your surgery.

At Home after your procedure

  • After you are discharged, it is normal to experience sleepiness and dizziness for 12 to 24 hours after your procedure.  Do not operate machinery or do anything that requires alertness for 24 hours.  Be careful not to fall while moving around as your reaction times will not be the same as you are used to.
  • Rest is highly recommended.
  • No drinking alcohol.
  • Eat light and avoid fried, spicy, or greasy foods.
  • You may have some redness and sensitivity at the sight of your IV. This should go away within a few days. If pain persists or worsens, please call your doctor.
  • The day after your surgery, a nurse will call to follow up on your recovery.  For Friday procedures, this call will happen on Monday.
  • Please review the discharge instructions received from your doctor. This information can be found in the white folder returned to you.
  • If you experience anything unusual after your surgery, please call your surgeon, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911.
  • If you provided your email address upon check-in you will receive an emailed patient satisfaction survey within three (3) days.  We would really appreciate any feedback that you have, positive or negative.  Completing the survey helps us improve our services and also enters you in a monthly drawing for an Amazon gift card.
